Wave #2, 2010, Oil on canvas

Wave #2, 2010, Oil on canvas

This painting was commissioned by Brian Lee Smith. He wanted me to create a painting that incorporated some of his favorite motifs from my other paintings: waves, water, clouds and plants.

Night Raiders' Return, 2010, Oil on canvas

Night Raiders' Return, 2010, Oil on canvas

The night raiders return from pillaging a neighboring village across the water. Smoke billows through the sky; a woman awaits her pirate lover's return as the attacked village burns in the distance.

Dream of the Protector, 2010, Oil on masonite

Dream of the Protector, 2010, Oil on masonite

As a husband and new father, I am under a lot of pressure to be able to care for my family. The anxiety associated with this pressure often manifests in the world of the imagination and dreams. The foreboding shark fin in the distance creates a tension with the serene sleeping forms in the foreground.

Spring #3, 2010, Oil on canvas

Spring #3, 2010, Oil on canvas

New growth sprouts from the nourishing earth as its leaves absorb the illuminating sun.

The Fool, 2010, Oil on canvas

The Fool, 2010, Oil on canvas

The Fool has his head in the clouds and so does not see where his feet will fall. If he's not careful, he may take one step too many. This image is based off The Fool card from the classic Rider tarot deck. A print of this image can be purchased here.

The Voyeur, 2010, Oil on canvas

The Voyeur, 2010, Oil on canvas

A bathing beauty is seemingly unaware of the voyeur's gaze. Given our current social media technology, it seems like we're all watching each other.

As Is, 2010, Oil on masonite

As Is, 2010, Oil on masonite

My paintings often start with an unplanned composition of shapes. Those shapes can evolve into characters or objects or whatever I can imagine. One of my primary processes while painting is to identify the areas I like and the areas I don't like. I won't touch the areas that I like and only work in areas that I don't like. When I no longer identify areas that I'm not happy with, the painting is done. In this case, I liked the image much more quickly than usual. I decided to declare the painting finished and hung it in the gallery "as is."

At Thunderbird Oasis, 2011, Oil on Canvas

At Thunderbird Oasis, 2011, Oil on Canvas

Welcome to the wonder of the imagination! Here we see the giant Thunderbird in its natural setting. Ancient pyramids and flying saucers are never too far away.

Heroine, 2012, Oil on Canvas

Heroine, 2012, Oil on Canvas

The Heroine is unafraid as she faces down a horrible monster from the deep. She is a woman who doesn't need to be saved.

Man Overboard, 2011, Oil on Canvas

Man Overboard, 2011, Oil on Canvas

A weary mermaid looks on as a sailor throws himself from the deck of a ship. She is skeptical of his intentions.

Birth of Man, 2011, Oil on Canvas

Birth of Man, 2011, Oil on Canvas

Within the heart of every person is both good and evil. We are walking contradictions.
